A child’s jaw is the foundation for proper tooth alignment, healthy breathing, and overall facial development. When the upper jaw is too narrow, it can lead to crowded teeth, bite problems, and even difficulty breathing through the nose. Over time, these challenges may also contribute to speech concerns, sleep issues, and the need for more complex orthodontic treatment later on.
At Tooth + Tongue Dental, we use pediatric palatal expanders—a gentle and effective appliance that gradually widens the upper jaw. By creating more space early on, we help permanent teeth come in properly, improve bite alignment, and support better nasal airflow. The result? A healthier, more balanced smile and a stronger foundation for your child’s future growth.
Palatal expanders are one of the most effective early orthodontic treatments for guiding jaw growth and preventing future dental challenges. By addressing problems early, we can help your child enjoy a healthier smile and reduce the need for more extensive treatments later on.
Prevents Severe Crowding – Creates the space needed for adult teeth to come in properly, lowering the chance of extractions or braces down the road.
Corrects Bite Issues – Helps align the upper and lower jaws to fix crossbites, overbites, and underbites.
Improves Nasal Breathing – Expanding the palate also opens the airway, making it easier for children to breathe through their nose.
Reduces Future Orthodontic Work – Early intervention can prevent more complex treatments like jaw surgery or lengthy braces as teens.
Palatal expanders are most effective between ages 6 and 12, while the jaw is still developing. With early evaluation and care, we can make a big difference in your child’s oral health, comfort, and confidence.
We know that choosing the right orthodontic treatment for your child is a big decision. At Tooth + Tongue Dental, we make it easier by focusing on expert care, personalized treatment, and a comfortable, stress-free experience for both kids and parents.
Specialized Pediatric & Orthodontic Care – Our team has extensive experience in early orthodontics, giving growing children the best start for a healthy smile.
Precise, Custom-Fit Treatment – Using digital impressions and advanced imaging, we create expanders that are both comfortable and highly effective.
Comprehensive Support – From the first visit to the last adjustment, we’re here with ongoing guidance, check-ins, and encouragement every step of the way.
Proven Long-Term Benefits – Early treatment with a palatal expander can help avoid more complex orthodontic procedures later—saving time, money, and stress.
Every child is unique, which is why we take a personalized approach to every treatment plan. Our goal is to ensure your child’s journey is positive, comfortable, and sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
Early orthodontic care can give your child the foundation for a lifetime of healthier smiles. If your little one shows signs of a narrow upper jaw, crowding, or bite issues, a pediatric palatal expander may be the key to creating the space they need for proper alignment and growth.

At Tooth + Tongue Dental, we believe in providing complete orthodontic care to support your child’s growth and comfort throughout treatment. Our Palatal Expander Package includes:
If your child has crowding, a crossbite, or difficulty breathing through their nose, a palatal expander may be recommended. The best way to determine if an expander is needed is to schedule a consultation, where we can assess your child’s jaw development and bite alignment.
Most children experience mild pressure or tightness when the expander is first adjusted, but this sensation usually fades within a few minutes to hours. Since expansion is done gradually, the process is generally painless.
Most children wear their expander for four to six months, depending on the severity of their case. Once the desired expansion is achieved, the appliance is left in place for a few additional months to stabilize the results.
There may be a brief adjustment period as your child gets used to the expander, but most children adapt within a few days. Speaking and eating may feel different at first, but with practice, they quickly return to normal.
